As of January 2026 those staff working to Agenda for Change (AfC) terms and conditions will find that their mileage rates will be going down. This is because the current mechanism for calculating the rate is based on international oil prices and they have gone down. This will seem ridiculous to those of you who are aware that everything else seems to be costing more.
For some time the collective NHS trade unions have been aware that the current method of calculating mileage rates is outmoded and does not reflect what our members experience when running their vehicles. A working group has been working on creating a new method based on the actual cost of living, while also taking into account petrol, diesel and electric vehicles. There is likely to be some wider consultation, which we will share via our local Reps so please engage if you are given the opportunity. Also, those of you who are Reps and managers engaged with local negotiating committees should look out for any local consultation.
BOS will continue to engage with consultation at the national level and ensure the membership is informed of any agreements via our rep network. Please let me know if there are concerns or issues.
