The first year working as a qualified Orthoptist is a challenging yet daunting time. There are multiple stresses that may lead to anxiety and self-doubt. It is important during this period to ensure you take time to reflect on your experiences and learn how to be kind to yourself.
We would like to signpost new graduates to some fantastic resources that have been developed by the Elizabeth Casson Trust. The project titled Year 1: Thriving not Surviving led to the development of a selection of self-help guides to support the wellbeing of newly qualified occupational therapists in their first year of practice. These booklets are a valuable resource that provide constructive ways to tackle negative thought patterns, overcome your inner critic, improve your self-confidence and ensure you are prioritising your wellbeing.
Although these resources were designed primarily for newly qualified occupational therapists, they are easily adaptable for use by orthoptists. We would urge all early career orthoptists to explore the booklets and work through the parts they feel would be of benefit to them.
