It is with deep sadness and shock that we write to inform you of the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Helen Simpson, who served as an orthoptist at Coventry for 35 years, and for the last 12 years as Head of department.
Initially Helen trained in Birmingham and then took up an Orthoptic position in Leicester. She then moved to Coventry in 1990.
Helen was not only a respected and dedicated leader, but also a kind, thoughtful, and supportive presence within her team. Her contributions to the department and to the wider Trust were immense and will leave a lasting impact. She worked tirelessly for her team, and always had an open door, ready to help any who knocked.
Helen was an incredible advocate for the orthoptic profession, and under her leadership the department became the first in the country to develop an orthoptic-led paediatric eye casualty service, which has won several local and national awards. She always got to know people personally and always had a funny story to share – she was the best storyteller. She was an exceptional mentor and helped nurture a large number of orthoptists over the years. She understood her team very well and saw the potential in all. She selflessly worked for others and always put her team first. She will be greatly missed by all.
Our thoughts are with her family, Steve, Rob, Rachel and Michael.
