This competency framework was developed in consultation with the British and Irish Orthoptic Society (BIOS) Education and Professional Development Committee (EPDC), Clinical Advisory Group (CAG) and Non Clinical Advisory Group (nCAG) Leads and clinical specialists.

It aims to:

• Set out a standard list of the knowledge and skills necessary for Orthoptists to practice safely and effectively in a range of advanced practice roles.
• Create a framework that promotes consistency and quality in standards of care in specialised areas of practice.
• Inform continuing professional development and postgraduate training across the profession.
