Job description:
Are you seeking to continue your orthoptic career in a friendly, supportive and hardworking team in beautiful Pembrokeshire? We are looking for a part time (up to 35 hours), permanent Orthoptist to join our developing team.
The successful applicant will be primarily based at Withybush Hospital working alongside the Team Lead Orthoptist. We are keen to develop our community clinics in Tenby and Pembroke and your input, interest and ideas will be very much welcomed. The ability to travel between sites is required (travel time allocated). At times, you may be asked to support clinics in Carmarthenshire to cover annual leave.
The successful candidate will support our orthoptic services to paediatric and adult patients. Every day is different and you will be responsible for a diverse orthoptic caseload and contribute to assessing, treating and managing patients referred from the Emergency Eye clinic, Maxillofacial team, Neurology, Stroke team, Paediatrics, Health Visitors, GPs and Optometrists. We run joint clinics alongside two Paediatric Consultant Ophthalmologists, Oculoplastic Consultant, Paediatric Optometrist and Emergency Eye clinic. Our team is actively involved in routine clinical audit and CPD/teaching time is supported and protected.
Our orthoptists already have extended roles in medical retina and full training will be given for candidates who wish to further their skills in this area. We are keen to develop our extended roles in the future into neuro-ophthalmology and stroke.
We are an accredited BIOS orthoptic placement site and have recently started taking orthoptic students on placement. Therefore, previous experience or an interest in teaching would be desirable.
CPD is actively promoted with participation in departmental audits, journal club, teaching sessions and monthly orthoptic team meetings. Involvement would also be welcomed in providing clinical teaching to a wide range of healthcare professionals/primary care cluster including Health Visitors, student nurses, school screeners, Optometrists and GP’s as well as promoting orthoptics at careers events.
