Enhance support in your clinic with a Family Outreach Officer

Guide Dogs is a national charity that supports adults, children and young people with sight loss to live actively, independently and well. Our Family Outreach Service supports all children, young people and their families and carers, from the point of diagnosis and beyond.

We’re excited to announce a new opportunity to partner with us as we expand this vital service.

Our Family Outreach Officers work closely with specialists in Paediatric Ophthalmology Units, ensuring children, young people and their families and carers receive the best possible care and support.

Currently, our Family Outreach Officers are placed in partner hospitals in London and Sheffield, with new placements launching in Mansfield and Leeds later this year.

Our Family Outreach Officers use their expertise to develop personalised support plans for each family. The support we provide can include:

  • Early diagnosis support – Helping families navigate the initial stages following diagnosis.
  • Understanding eye conditions – Offering practical advice on specific eye conditions, stimulating vision, and helping families better understand their child’s needs.
  • Practical support and advice – Providing day-to-day guidance based on each family’s circumstances.
  • Referrals – Connecting families to appropriate statutory services and other organisations supporting children with vision impairments.
  • Access to Guide Dogs services – As the largest provider of support services for children with sight loss in the UK, we can offer direct referrals to our full range of specialist services.
  • Emotional support – Offering compassionate support, assessing needs and signposting to further help if required.
  • Information, advice, and guidance – Covering key areas such as health, education, welfare and social care.
  • Certificate of Vision Impairment – Providing information, advice and guidance throughout the registration process, including completing and processing all necessary paperwork.
  • Ongoing Support – Regular reviews and reassessments for returning families to ensure continued and relevant support.

We are currently seeking a new partner to help us expand this free, life-changing service across in the UK. For an informal discussion, please contact stephanie.village@guidedogs.org.uk.
