Development of home vision-monitoring kit

BIOS British and Irish Orthoptic Society. Logo includes eye in brand colours.

Kay Pictures would like to quickly develop a home vision-monitoring kit for your patients undergoing amblyopia treatment to use during this difficult period when clinical appointments may not be available. It will be in the form of a free app for parents to download on any phone.

We are also hoping to extend the free period to use our iSight Test app, but I believe that a vision monitor app is more appropriate for parents to use at home, as this test will measure vision in a different way, and allow parents to plot changes in vision by recording test results on a chart each week, similar to an amblyopia chart.

The app will have a very simplified test process using both letters or Kay Picture optotypes. The instructions and recording chart will only be made available through qualified eye professionals who are treating amblyopia patients. Clear guidance on when orthoptic advice should be sought will be provided in the instructions.

To make this happen we need to cover the outside development costs of making the two apps (android and Apple), which will be around £10,000. All other costs will be met by Kay Pictures.

We urgently need to know which orthoptic departments would like to participate and are willing to make a single payment of perhaps £50 to £100 to provide this service to their patients. The developers are aware of the urgency and can turn this around in a couple of weeks.

Those NHS Trusts who buy the product will be sent links to the apps plus personalised PDFs of the instructions and charts to give to their patients in printed or digital form.
