Congratulations to our MMedSci ACP graduates!

BIOS British and Irish Orthoptic Society. Logo includes eye in brand colours.

Earlier in 2025 we celebrated the successful graduation of our first ever cohort of Advanced Practitioners in paediatric ophthalmology!

Starting part-time distance learning in 2021, these students, mentored by local paediatric ophthalmologists, have now achieved NHS England Advanced Practice recognition, after three years at the University of Sheffield.

Congratulations to our pioneering ACPs! They’ve independently managed diverse patients, created new services, led pathways, and brought clinical leadership, education, research, and evidence-based practice to their teams.

There are lots of options to studying this programme with us – you can take the one-year clinical only module in paediatric ophthalmology.  The clinical leadership & education in ophthalmology module can be studied on its own in 6 months, and the whole degree, takes 3 years.

Want to know more?  Look out for our upcoming webinar on Wednesday 23rd April at 12.30pm.  Register here:  Paediatric Ophthalmology Advanced Practice Webinar registration

Research just published in Eye by Prof. Saurabh Jain et al. details the severe workforce challenges in UK paediatric ophthalmology.  There has never been a better time to upskill & take on this Masters!

Full Master’s funding is currently offered by NHSE via regional faculties, a window of opportunity that may close. Please contact me or come to the webinar and I will answer any questions you have.

What our students say:  “The paediatric ophthalmology ACP University of Sheffield course is opening up possibilities and opportunities within my working day and career that up until now haven’t been possible. Consultants, managers and patients all see the potential and real benefits that we, as non-medical health care professionals can bring to paediatric ophthalmology.”  Claire Dawson, 2nd year trainee.
