At the British and Irish Orthoptic Society (BIOS), equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) is central to our vision of a professional community where every member feels valued, supported, and empowered. We believe that everyone, regardless of background, role, or pay grade, deserves an inclusive environment that enables them to thrive and reach their full potential. Our commitment to upholding equality legislation and creating a culture of respect is aimed at enriching the experiences of our members, enhancing patient care, and raising the overall quality of our services.
As outlined in the BIOS Strategic Plan, EDI is a foundational pillar within our organisation. In December 2024, we launched the new BIOS EDI Strategy that reaffirms our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment throughout the orthoptic profession. This strategic initiative, led by the BIOS EDI Lead, aims to embed Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles into our practices and culture, fostering an environment where every member feels valued, supported, and empowered.
As part of this strategy, we aim to create EDI Diversity Networks — safe, collaborative spaces where members can engage in meaningful discussions, share their diverse perspectives, and contribute to positive change within BIOS. These networks will provide essential support for challenging norms, fostering inclusive practices, and amplifying every voice within our community. By joining these networks, members will have the opportunity to showcase and develop leadership skills, driving forward BIOS’s commitment to inclusivity across the orthoptic profession.
To celebrate and recognise individuals who go above and beyond in promoting EDI, we’re launching a new EDI Digital Badge programme. Members who make outstanding contributions to EDI will be awarded these digital badges, which can be proudly displayed on social media profiles to showcase their commitment to fostering equality and inclusion within the profession.
In addition, we’re conducting a comprehensive review of our policies to ensure they align with EDI principles and promote fairness and inclusivity across all areas. We will also enhance our website’s structure and content, focusing on improving the accessibility, relevance, and presentation of EDI resources to meet the evolving needs of the BIOS community.
Through these initiatives, we’re committing to creating a true sense of belonging for all, building an inclusive profession that celebrates and represents the rich diversity of our members and the communities they serve.
“As Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Lead, it is my vision that all BIOS members, regardless of their characteristics or identity background, pay grade or job, experience fairness and equality of opportunity. Guided by equality legislation and a determination to support and enhance BIOS member’s experiences and inadvertently better the Orthoptic patients’ journeys and use of our services. I am motivated by the shared purpose of creating a sense of belonging for all our members and believe we should celebrate as well as share our similarities and differences amongst ourselves.”
